David and Goliath

As a child
I wanted to be good
and behave
the way David did,
with his good buddy,
Even when
David wasn’t good, I knew –
because he had his own
TV show on Sundays
at 8 in the morning –
that boys
like me,
were sure to be wakened
by mother or father
to turn the dial
to channel 7,
despite our
gucky teeth,
the untouchable scent
of pajama bottoms,
and the Dennis the Menace hair.
As for Goliath,
he wasn’t
as strong
as people
he should be.
no one saw,
I think,
the beauty
of his fierceness.
this made him look
like a monster.
